Most recipes have a layout that looks like this:

           title

           subtitle

           headnote

sidenote   ingredient list   sidenote

           method

           endnote

        illustration

The subtitle, all the notes (headnote, sidenote, endnote), and the illustration are optional; the title and method are obligatory, and the ingredient list is close to obligatory in a modern recipe.

Shoehorned into this layout are some or all of the answers to some or all of the questions we might legitimately ask of a recipe.
