Trying to figure out where to cut asparagus is hard. If you cut too high, it's wasteful. If you cut too low, you'll get some of the woody part, which feels nasty in your mouth.
Instead, try snapping it.
Grasp one stalk of asparagus in both hands, say your left hand halfway down the stalk and your right hand at the butt end.
Now gently bend the stalk till it snaps apart.
The snap tells you where the stalk wants to split. The part in your right hand is woody and tough. The part in your left hand is tender and sweet.
But don't throw the woody part away. Use it to make asparagus soup.
